The president of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences Juras Banys was solemnly awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa of UzhNU
On Thursday, September 20, 2018, at the meeting of the Academic Council of UzhNU, the title of Doctor Honoris Causa of Uzhhorod National University was awarded to the President of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, Professor Juras Banys. The Rector of UzhNU Professor Volodymyr Smolanka presented him with the diploma and a professorial mantle.
When introducing the new Doctor Honoris Causa, the vice-rector for research of UzhNU Ihor Studenyak said: "It’s a great honor for me to introduce a Lithuanian scientist, physicist, Doctor habilitatus, professor, the president of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences and a distinguished person of the Republic of Lithuania, Mr. Juras Banys. Expressing our deep respect, we are pleased to award the honorary title and hand over the attributes of the Honorary Doctor of Uzhhorod National University to our great friend Juras Banys for his personal scientific achievements in the field of physics, education and science, and for his significant contribution to the development of international cooperation between Ukraine and the Republic of Lithuania".
Receiving the award, the Honorary Doctor of UzhNU Juras Banys emphasized: "This is a very exciting moment for me, and I am very grateful to Uzhhorod National University for the fruitful cooperation that has been going on since the 80-ies of the twentieth century. Together with the scientists from Uzhhorod, we have prepared more than 100 joint scientific publications for the world's leading editions, and have implemented a lot of joint scientific projects. I’m sure that our future cooperation will be successful too."
Juras Banys was born on December 30, 1962, in Vilnius. After finishing secondary school in Vilnius he began his studies at the Faculty of Physics of Vilnius University, which he successfully graduated from in 1985. In 1985, Juras Banys started working as a lecturer at Vilnius University and in 2000 he became an associate professor. In 1999, he headed the laboratory of dielectric spectroscopy of phase transitions at the Department of Radiophysics of the Faculty of Physics. From 2003 to 2007, Juras Banys was the dean of the Faculty of Physics of Vilnius University, and since 2007 he was appointed as the Vice-rector for research at this educational institution.
From 2012 to 2015 Juras Banys was the Rector of Vilnius University. Since 2011 he has been a full member of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, and on October 24, 2017, at the general meeting of the members of the Academy, Juras Banys was elected as the president of the Academy of Sciences of Lithuania.
It should be emphasized that Juras Banys is a scientist recognized in Europe and the world. He is the author of more than 350 scientific articles. He participated in international scientific conferences in Germany, France, Italy, the USA, Japan, China, Russia, England, Spain, the Czech Republic, Poland, Ukraine, etc., and delivered over 900 reports at conferences.
Juras Banys acquired experience and studied at Oxford University (as a Soros scholarship winner) and at the University of Leipzig (as a Humboldt award winner). In 2002, Juras Banys was awarded the Lithuanian National Award in the field of science. In 2003 - P. Bradzius Award of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences in the field of experimental physics. He is a foreign member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences.
