Rector of UzhNU held the first neurosurgical master class in Ukraine, the operation was broadcast online

The process of a very complicated tumor removal surgery was broadcast online from the Transcarpathian Center for Neurosurgery and Neurology to more than 20 specialists from all over Ukraine and the neighboring Moldova.

The average duration of such an operation is four hours. It’s very difficult to remove a tumor without touching the vital tissues.

During the operation, they conduct special electro-physiological monitoring for the doctors to be able to control the functions of patient’s limbs and cranial nerves while he/she is under anasthesia.

A neurosurgical microscope is used for such operations. The image from it is broadcast on the screen in the lecture room and on the monitor in the operating room for some of the master class participants. Volodymyr Smolanka explains that the tumor is deep enough, and the first surgeon’s task is to get to it carefully.

Neurosurgeons and neurophysiologists who have come to Uzhhorod to take part in the master class can not only observe, but also ask questions during the surgery.

The Transcarpathian Center for Neurosurgery and Neurology doctors perform very complicated surgeries. They have unique experience in the surgical treatment of brain stem tumors. Patients are sent here from all over Ukraine. Every year, more than three hundred patients address our specialists for help.
