Historical background of the Faculty of Roman and Germanic Philology – the future Faculty of Foreign Philology – goes back to 1966, when it was established as an independent unit within the Philological Faculty. It started then with three departments: the department of English philology, the department of German philology and the department of French philology. In 1990 there was an expansion and a new department of Romanian philology was founded. Thus, the Faculty provides training in these four specialities both for full-time and part-time students. Training at the full-time department lasts 5 years, while part-time students study for 6 years.

At present there are five departments within the Faculty – English Philology Department, German Philology Department, French Language and Foreign Literature Department, Classical and Romanian Philology Department and Department of Foreign Languages. The teaching staff comprise 107 members, including one full-time professor, Doctor of Philology; two part-time professors, and 27 Candidates of Sciences in Philology, associate professors.

 English Philology Department is headed by Candidate of Sciences in Philology, associate professor Holyk S.V.

 German Philology Department is headed by Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, associate professor O. M. Hvozdyak.

 French Language and Foreign Literature Department is headed by Candidate of Sciences in Philology, associate professor M. M. Roshko.

Department of Classical and Romanian Philology is headed by Candidate of Sciences in Philology, associate professor E. V. Shved.

Department of Foreign Languages ​​is headed by Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, associate professor O. P. Bartosh.

The Faculty of Foreign Philology conducts courses for such educational qualifying degrees as “Bachelor”, “Specialist” and “Master” in the following specialities: "English Language and Literature", "German Language and Literature", "French Language and Literature" and "Romanian Language and Literature". Graduates receive qualifications "Bachelor of Philology" (6.020303), "Teacher of Philology" (7.02030302) and students of English Department can qualify for "Master of Philology" (8.02030302).

The Faculty trains teachers of foreign languages for secondary schools and other educational establishments, as well as researchers in the field of linguistic studies. The qualification students acquire allows them to work as translators and interpreters for diplomatic services, state institutions and socio-political organizations, media, travel agencies and leading companies with foreign investments.

Currently the Faculty comprises 620 students, including 396 students of a day-time department and 233 students of a part-time department. The Faculty gives students the possibility to gain broad academic and scientific knowledge necessary for the formation of the specialists to be. In addition to the language they major in, students choose one or two foreign languages for optional doing. Mastering the academic disciplines of the Curriculum is accompanied with a pedagogical and undergraduate teaching practice throughout the 4th and 5th years of studying. Meanwhile the students of Romanian Department do folklore and dialectological practice throughout the 1st and 2nd years of training. Students write three year papers: one project is dedicated to foreign literature studies and the next two deal with the research of foreign language(s). An efficient use of material resources (a computer class, an audio-visual class, a library of foreign literature with its 225,000 stock of educational, scientific and methodological literature, fiction books and periodicals) provides a successful training of professionals in foreign philology. The departments have also put into practice scenarios of business games and elaborated sets of phono- and video materials, containing different types of drilling exercises as well as communicative tasks on social, educational, cultural and scientific topics, etc.

Lectures and seminars are often conducted by proficient teachers and scholars from Austria, the USA, France, Germany, Hungary and Romania. The best students annually have an opportunity to undergo language training courses in English or German-speaking countries and travel to the USA owing to the program “Work and Travel”. Students also take an active part in public life of the Faculty and University, in sports clubs and extra-curricular activities that contribute much to their successful training.

The Faculty also runs literary school named after Petro Skunts’ and led by M. Roshko, a member of the National Union of Writers of Ukraine.

To be enrolled to the Faculty applicants take exams in Ukrainian language and literature, foreign language of the speciality to be (English / German / French) and History of Ukraine (all based on the results of national External Independent Assessment). Applicants to Romanian Department additionally take an entrance exam in Romanian language and literature at university.
